Can't connect to 5GHz + Super low download

I have two problems I need to solve:

1. My internet doesn't connect to 5GHz networks.
Our Wifi has 2 different connections: 5GHz and 2.4GHz. Occasionally, it does connect to the 5GHz. But, most of the time, I can only connect to the 2.4GHz.

2. Insanely low download speeds
Even on the 5GHz network, my ping is around the 1mb/s mark, which is terriable as we should get up to 100mb/s. Even my 15 year old laptop gets better!

Also what type of wireless security is on the router? wpa, wpa2, wep? Some of the older pc's won't connect to the higher end security protocols so you have to end up lowering the security. I had to do that to a clients belkin router as their old laptop wouldn't connect using wpa2, had to lower it to wpa.

But as Darren says, try restarting router first. Also make sure you have the latest firmware. Then let us know how its acting.
