Cant connect to network!

I bought a laptop today but I am having trouble connecting to my network. The wi-fi type is b/g/n but it is having trouble finding a network which my usb g adapter can find no problem (they are only inches from each other) then after installing windows updates, I can no longer connect to the network at all, it just keeps on saying "Could not connect to the network". I have downloaded the latest wireless drivers (atheros) I could find for my laptop (acer 5733) but to no avail.

Any suggestions?
 
Delete the existing wireless connection for network and reset it back up, this time making sure you enter the correct security key for the wireless.
 
the security key was correct, if I was right next to the router, I could connect, then I installed the updates, restarted the laptop then it would not connect again. I can connect now just fine with the usb adapter plugged into the laptop, its just when im using the built in wi-fi
