i was at my friends house and i was trying to defragment his computer but when i went to do it it would stay at 1% for like half a hour. he has not done it for a while but they seems like it is stalling or not working. how can i make it so it will defragment. he has win xp. i was able to do disk clean up if that helps to know.

make sure everything is shut down and you aren't using the machine and turn the screen saver off
everytime anything writes to the disk the winXP defrag console starts over because the disk configuration has changed from what it originally was, close down all application or just use safemode and make sure nothing is running
