Can't enter standby

I have an HP laptop with WinXP Home OS. I used to be able to enter standby but I believe a program was deleted from my computer and I can no longer enter standby. any fixes?

Do you mean the standby button doesnt work, or you can you not enter standby by selecting it from the start menu either?

the standby button doesn't work. Turn off and and restart can both be selected but standby can't. It's still in the window that pops up but isn't "lit up"

I am not sure if this will help but try switching off the "Welcome Screen" and also "Fast User Switching" and that will make you log and turn off like in the older version of Windows. When you do that, try clicking the arrow when you select "Turn off Computer" and then select "Standby". Post back if it works or if it doesn't work.

Try downloading or re-installing your video drivers, this happens to me everytime i reformat my computer. the standby button turns like invisible and unclickable.

i tried turning off the welcome screen and reinstalling the video driver but neither solved the problem. Thanks for everyone's help so far!
