Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: < windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe Please re-install a copy of the above file. I had windows xp before and I didnt have a recovery cd or anything but i have a new windows xp cd and the key but nothing loads or comes up except for that message. the computer is a compaq and it not new but not really old either. can anyone help me?

Hi mate, I recentley purchased a laptop, with free upgrade to Windows 7.
Then I applyed for upgrade disk.
I wanted 64bit Windows 7, but ACER would only provide 32bit version. Anyway got a good deal from a mate who sold me one from his family pack. Anyway there's away of installing Windows 7 From a fresh install. Cause I did iT:D - running sWEet,, any waze I'm glade because I fink that fresh is best,,,,No leftovers....eh?

Post a new thread. Don't post in another problem thread.

i doubt the hard drive is fried i have had simalar problems with other critcal files, such as ntdlr, which give the exact same error you have
even running fine until i restart the computer and i fixed it several times

you said you have the windows xp disc ( or a disc) the disc will still work to repair your os or do a fresh install even if it is a different disk

sounds like you need to tell the computer to boot from the CD drive not the hard drive

to do this you need to access the computers bios, this is usually done by pressing DEL or F1 during start up, it should say on the first screen something like press del to enter bios/setup
once there look for boot devices and select your CD/DVD drive as the first one, then put in the windows disc and restart the computer, it should then say press any key to boot from cd once its passed the first screen ( this is called the post screen btw)

(if this doesnt work in the bios try setting the CD/DVD drive first and disabling the rest, but remember to switch it back when you ve finished installing otherwise it prob wont boot the os)
