Can't get my HDTV to work as monitor

I can't get my 26" LCD TV to work with my video card. My video card has a DVI input, but my TV only has HDMI so I bought a cable that would convert the HDMI to the DVI. Well, it doesn't work. Is it the cable, or is there something else I'm not doing?

Have you changed the resolution to what the TV can handle? Often times it tries to set it to a resolution the TV can't support, which may lead to it not displaying anything at all.

that did the trick. i really appreciate the help.

i was also wondering if I could hook it up and use my laptop LCD if i wanted to. my laptop has a VGA port so I figure it may be possible.

is it possible any other way. it would be pretty sweet if I could use everything on my laptop (screen, keyboard, etc.) with the processing power of the desktop for gaming purposes.

I believe I heard somewhere of using FireWire or USB with some type of controller card, however IMO I believe that would only work with low resolutions with low refresh rates, because the bandwidth of USB/FireWire would be crippling.

I'm having trouble getting the HDTV to work consistently. I will get it working, but if I restart the computer it shows a green screen with the football game in the background that is coming in on my HD antenna when it reboots.
