cant get my new graphics card to work

I am trying to install a pny gforce 8400gs graphics card to my advent qc5003 i have updated the bios to the latest version. i have been in to the bios and changed the setting to pci slot i have also deactivated my old on board graphics card in device manager but when i put the new card in the computer it wont boot up the fan runs but that's about it and all im left with is a blank screen. I am a novice to computers so with your answers can you bear that in mind and please try not to loose me with all the tech, i have also been in to pc world and had a chat with them and he confirmed that the card is compatible with my computer.My os is vista 64.

Disabling your on board graphics card in device manager does not disable it in the bios. The reason you're seeing the black screen is because the bios is competing for which graphics card to use still.

Solution:

1. Make sure you've installed your new graphics card drivers from the CD you got with the card.

2. Disable the on board graphics card in the bios.
3, Reboot windows, it should now use the new graphics card.

Hopefully this works for you.
