Can't install DirectX 9.0

Alright so I'm running a nice, old computer at work where they're too cheap to buy me a new one. I believe it's a 2002 Windows XP. I use it for AutoDesk Inventor 2010 (Also too cheap to upgrade to newer version). Suddenly some features stopped showing up while using Inventor so I uninstalled it, and reinstalled it. However, during the installation, a message came up that said it could not install DirectX 9.0 because it had not passed the logo testing. I did some research out there and people say to download it right from the windows website. I got the same error trying to download it directly from Windows.

Can someone please explain a little about what DirectX does? I'm missing the Inventor Studio option and the ability to export to PDF as well as save as a STEP file in case it matters.

I'm also looking for a solution to this. Is there anything I can try? I'm starting to think this computer is messed up beyond repair. I tried to restore the computer to a previous state a couple days after I couldn't get it to work and it just kept saying something about the restore feature not being able to work because something was missing or something like that.

Any advice? Thanks!

Navigate to C:\windows\system32 and see if you have a file named dxdiag.exe and open it. Then let us know what version it is, it will tell you at the very bottom of where it says system information. It will say directx version:

Just run the DX_Update from Microsoft and it will update any necessary files.
