Can't install net.framework 3.5

I am having this bizarre problem when I try to install net.framework 3.5. I have tried to install it a number of times with no luck, and when I try to check the error log nothing comes up. I googled the problem and made sure there were no obvious problems (e.g. - IIS is activated). I tried to install using the more comprehensive "dotnetfx35.exe" install file. That when I realized it was extracting to another partition which was not even on the same hard drive!! I thought maybe it was because I was installing from a partition other than C, so moved the file to C & tried again. Same problem, except this time it extracted to yet another partition, again not even on the same hard drive. I have not had this problem with any other version of net.framework. I am running XP Pro SP3.
Thanks

At this point 3.5 is geared more for Vista then XP. If you saw 3.0 go on you are all set since 1.1 followed by seeing 2.0 go on are the versions generally required for things like the ATI Catalyst C.C. in XP. 3.0 simply covers all bases there.

Is 2.0 on by chance? That is a must have at this point. As far as the newer releases not going on I suspect you may have a little bug in Windows itself. Try running the system file checker utility with the XP cd in the optical drive by typing in "sfc /scannow" at the Run command prompt right off of the Start menu followed by another try with 3.0 first.

With SP3 on even if that isn't a brand new installation disk seeing SP3 included you could be fighting against it since that would see the latest rolled up along with the service pack already. 3.0 can't install if 3.5 is already on being the newer version. That may be why 3.5 wouldn't go on either.
