Can't install some programmes/updates

Please has anyone got a clue what is wrong with my laptop?
It runs with Windows Vista SP2 (32 bit) and for some reason I cannot install some programmes such as iTunes/Quicktime and RealPlayer. They download but when it comes to installing just vanish without installing.
I have done everything I can think of like; clearing out temp files, stopping UAC, Rebooting upgrades, checking the disc, defragging... anything I can think of even restoring back to factory settings which now means I can't upgrade my Microsoft Office Student & Teacher 2007 because it now thinks I'm installing on more than 3 computers! (Try as I may I can't get anything on Microsoft site for me to contact them to see about changing this).
I feel it's got to be something to do with either my system or the security on my system, both of which I don't know anything about to be able to change anything that might help.
I would appreciate anything anyone can tell me to try and solve my problems.
