ok heres the refined problem to what i had posted earlier. when i try to install vista it boots the dvd and starts the installation process, but when it is like half way done with the inspecting the hardware section it gives me this error "CD/DVD drive device drivers needed." now i have never needed any drivers for my nec dvd burner. its not that old and the way i see it vista must be able to see the dvd drive fine to be running the installation in the first place. i know its not because of my raid being on because i dont run raid and all my sata drives are in ide mode. any ideas anyone? this is drivin me insane...

hmm, this is a strange one... is the disc scratched at all? Also, do you have any other drives that you could perhaps try the disc with. Borrow one from a friend?

Also, you might wnat to try unplugging any surplus devices, that may be interupting the install and causing that error.

Have you used this disc to install before or is this the first time?

no the disc is brand new no scratches. ok heres the slightly more elaborate version of whats going on. i originally had xp pro on my system. but i had just built this new one and wanted to give vista a try. the original vista i put on it was 32 bit. i had the problem originally with trying to install this version. so eventually i just installed it through windows and it installed fine. now i have the 64 bit version of vista and want to install it. but the 32bit vista will not let me install it through windows because im trying to install the 64 bit version and when i try to boot to it and install i have the same error message come up. so i know its not the disk, and i dont think it should be having a problem reading the drive because it boots to it. but when it gets partially through installation it gives me that error. thats the full version of whats goin on.
