Can't install XP?

I'm trying to reinstall XP. However, when I select to reinstall, then F8 to agree to the license agreement, it goes to the screen that indicates "searching for previous versions of Microsoft Windows..." and it sits there.
I've waited over an hour, but nothing changes. I've tried it numerous times and it never goes past that screen.
I also tried to run recover. When I get to the screen that asks for the operating system, I enter 1, then press enter and nothing happens there either.
Any ideas why this may be?

The hard drive may be bad, or your memory.

What happened?

Why are you reinstalling?

missing or corrupted config file. I tried copying the file first, but as per my original post, I wasn't able to get that far.
I thought maybe bad HDD, but wasn't sure.
Is there anyway to check? I'm not sure if I can run chkdsk in this situation I'm in.

A problem like this happened to me. It turned out to be my memory, so I bought brand new 2GB of RAM and when I installed it in my computer, it booted fine. Maybe this is the problem?

It could be the RAM I guess.

You can download Memtest86 and burn it to a disc with another computer and see.

Also, try removing the hard drive and putting it in another computer and see if you can access it.

It sounds like a hard drive issue to me. Do you have another hard drive you could put in it to test?

If you don't have another computer to test with, you may be stuck.

You can test the HDD with GWScan 5.12 from Western Digital (just burn the .iso image to a cd, and boot from the cd)
You can test your memory with Microsoft's Memory Diagnostics (also choose to extract the iso and then burn it onto a cd to boot from it).
These are both free diagnostic tools.
