I couldn't log on to my computer yesterday. The night before all was well. But I tried to log on yesterday and all it did was boot and then went to the log in screen, I picked my log in, but all that happened was it showed a blank desktop(NO ICONS) then right to log out. I tried to log on a couple of time, all wiht the same result!Any ideas? My system is a Dell XPS Gen4 3.6Ghz, 1Mb ram, 320mb HD (2X160 HD), RAID 0, Windows XP Pro SP2. I was on the phone with the Dell tech support guys, but they weren't really of any help. I was told that it could be a corrupt registry, virus, or spyware. I am running Spycatcher 2006 on my system along with Norton Internet Security 2005. I ran a spyware scan and it came back clean. At least I thought it came back clean! LOL We (Dell and I) tried a bunch of things but nothing worked. Well almost nothing, a system restore to an earlier date worked. But I would liked to know exactly what happened and how to prevent it from happening again. I would also like to know how to get my system back to where it was before the problem without having to reload all my stuff back and without having to completely reinstall (swipe the drives) everything on my system. Any help would be greatly apreciated!

did your computer come with a system restore disk? because that's what i used to clean up my computer the last like 5 times lol.

i had the same problem that you had and i think it has to do with the programs downloaded on your system. see, when you go onto websites and download programs, they can sometimes be connected to other programs and they will be put onto your system as well.

one thing that you want to do is run disk cleanups, disk defragments, going to the add/remove section of your computer and removing unused or unwanted programs, or clicking on the "My computer" icon and going to the C: , then program files, and deleting programs that way.

so basically, check to see if you have unwanted programs. it seems to be the source of alot of computer corruption lately.

Thanks Brandon for the info. But Dell doesn't supply you with a recovery disk. Kinda blows, but what are you gonna do. I did restore my system with the system restore utility and got most of my stuff back. But I guess I was wondering how I got the problem in the first place. I ususally don't download stuff from the net unless I know the source. I'm kinda paranoid that way. I had other problems with my system, but this was the first one like this. I'm not relly hip with all this techno stuff and I just need to learn a little more I guess! LOL LOL
