cant make desktop short cuts from firefox

To start off I am running Windows Vista on a 3 yr old E machine. I like a lot of features that Firefox gives me, but I cant figure out how to create a desktop shortcut while using Firefox...This brings up 2 issues that I would love to get resolved.
1st off, When I use the traditional Internet Explorer to serf the web and I find a site that I want to create a desktop short cut, I just right click on a random part of the page and that will bring up options, 1 of those options is to "create desktop shortcut"...But if I'm running Firefox and right click, there is no option to create the shortcut...:(
I've tried opening a new session under the (E) internet explorer and create the short cut that way, which does give me the short cut, but only gives me a very generic icon with no logo.
I have explored sites to download Desk Top Icons, but being a man with a very limited income, I cant afford to purchase them.
So my questions would be...
(1) Is there a way to create desktop short cuts while using Firefox as my
browser? and
(2) Is there a site to download free normal "LOGO" icons? Normal being the
typical logo associated with the site, like a big "Y" for Yahoo.?
Please Help!
I am very new to this forum site so I am not certain that I have the option set to receive an E-mail when someone reply's so just in case there is some one with the answer I seek!...my email is [email protected], and my yahoo messenger is robertlanham79:)
Thank You every one for ANY replies.:)

File-->Save Page As and then save it to the desktop.

I don't know about the icon - I guess if it doesn't, you could use your own icon.

I find the bookmarks toolbar is a much more convenient way to easily access my favorite sites.

thanx for the reply

thank you Dean, i do use the bookmarks.
you say to use my own icons? if you can explain this in more detail I believe that you will be answering the biggest part of my questions...
I have visited a few download free icons sites, and i found the general vista icons, but i cant seem to actually download them. I think it is telling me FREE when they don't truly mean FREE! i want like a "FB" for face book...a big "Y" for yahoo, and A LOGO for this site... The older version of windows explorer did a pretty good job of making the desktop icons resemble the sites trademark logo's. do you understand what i am looking for? i do know that u can go into properties when u right click an icon and browse for new icons for the site, but i don't have any in BROWSE that will even look close to the Yahoo icon...any more help my friend? thank you!

Don't go to File-->Save As... in Firefox - that actually just saves an offline version of the web page. Instead, follow these steps.

To make icons, I use GIMP. Download and install it.

Then go to google.com and do an image search for an icon - for example, "facebook icon". Find an image you like, and click on it. Then click on "See Full Size Image". Now right click on the image and select "Save Image As" and save it somewhere.

Now, in your Downloads windows, right click the file and select "Open Containing Folder" Then find your image in the folder and right click it, and choose "Edit with GIMP"

When it loads up in GIMP, go to File-->Save As. Now change the extension from .jpg, .png, .gif or whatever it might be to .ico Then choose Save, and choose Save again.

Now close out of everything. Right click on the desktop and choose New-->Shortcut. In the location bar, type the name of the website you wish to create a shortcut to (e.g. "http://www.facebook.com") and name it (e.g. "Facebook").

Now, right click on your new shortcut, and choose Properties. Then click "Change Icon" and Browse for the icon you created. Select "Open", "OK" then "Apply"

And that's it. :D

Let me know if you have any questions. :good:

Thank you very much! That worked perfect.
I have 2 more questions for you at this time...
First off. When I put an icon or shortcut on my desktop it automatically places them in a vertical column on the left of the screen, can I change something so I can place the icons ANY where I want to on the screen?
and Secondly...my company ran out of their McAfee security(s), apparently we can only protect a certain number of computers on the one account. The question is more of an opinion but, do you trust Firefox to protect your computer better than just running the Internet Explorer Button alone?
Thank You deanj20 for you time and expertise!
