Can't ping

I have a desktop that is networked and on the same workgroup as my laptop and I can ping the laptop from the desktop but I can't ping the desktop from the laptop does anybody know why?

what is it the actiontec mi424wr

No, it's a Westell 327W, with the router/modem built in and it has wireless features. I have no idea how to configure it b/c of Verizon's unneeded complexity, I would rather have a Linksys or a Netgear, but I can't.

are you on the same subnet?

Can you ping 127.0.0.1?

exactly how are you trying to ping, describe it with as many words as possible.

How are you networked?

I am trying to ping the desktop that is hardwired from my laptop that is connected wirelessly I can ping my laptop from the desktop but I can't ping the desktop from the laptop even if I'm connected hard wire and I know the Ip address of both pcs but I just can't ping the desktop from my laptop

okay, I am trying to decifer this..........

So, you have a desktop that is directly connected to a laptop via cross over cable? Both have the same IP scheme and are on the same sub net? Then you have another laptop that is connected wirelessly?

Do you mean you have this all running through a router?

no I am not connected via crossover cable I was saying that I tried connecting the laptop wired and wirelessly and yes It is all running through a router

okay if everything is connecting through one router, then every client machine should be on the same IP scheme and the same subnet, via the router's DHCP.

Then your problems could be

-faulty nic

-some kind of non standard router config

-OS corruption of some sort, like bad TCP/IP stack or whatever

Can each machine reach the internet when its all hooked up together?

Yea I can get online so r u saying that I should reninstall the network stuff? and on which pc?

Listen do these steps.

PIng your loopback address 127.0.0.1,
ping you Nic ( your Ip address)
Ping you defualt Gateway ( your router)

let me know if you can do these setps.. if one fails let me know and, ill tell you whats wrong.

Also make sure you ip address are valid.. do you know how to subnet.. what subnetmask are you ip addresses on, make sure your assigend ip address is not the subnet or broadcast address..

tell us what the IP address of each of your host is.
and tell us what is the subnetmask u assigned.

also remeber. Windows xp firewall automatically drops ICMP request ( ping, and traceroute) so make sure you change the settings of the firewalls
by going to the advance tab then ICMP. or just turn off the firewall.

but asnwer those question and ill can see what the problem is

ok here is my IPconfig
Ipconfig.jpg

and I was able to ping what you told me without a problem

what do you mean by setting up a subnet mask?

I forgot to say that the desktop has sp1 and the laptop has sp2 do you think that might be the problem?
