Can't power up my new machine

I bought parts for my new computer and I've put most of it together but I can't make it power up. I have an NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI mobo, 500gb seagate hd, 8800 gts vid card, 500w power supply that came with the ultra case, a sony dvd burner, e6600 processor, and 4gb of oczddr2 667mhz RAM. I have connected as many power connectors as I can to the power supply but it won't start! My mobo's manual says that the power cord that connects to the cpu is 8 pin, but the only remaining cords I have are 6 pin and 4 pin, and the 6 pin connects to the video card. The opening on my mobo is 8 pin but I have "0" 8 pin cords coming from my power supply. Do I nned an adapter? Any ideas on why my PC won't turn on? I still have not connected the LED cables. I also don't seem to have any way to connect my DVD drive to my mobo. The only cord I have that connects to my DVD drive is the 4 pin power supply cord. This is my first time doing this. Thanks for the help.
 
well I don't have a camera but this is what the power supply says on it:

make sure you get the power switch, reset, and hdd led wires right...they sometimes get tricky and are generally really really small and must be inserted just as the manual of the mobo says.

The 4 pin power connector that you have left over, is that a square 2x2 connector with two yellow wires and two black wires? If so, that will plug into the 8pin connector on the board - the other 4 pins will remain empty.
 
so I have to plug in the LEDs to make it power up? I see a couple of LEDs on the board when i turn it on sometimes but the fans never turn on. Oh and for my DVD drive? Do I need to but another IDE cable, or will my mobo even support two of them?

the motherboard led comes on and it seems that one fan is now on. I still can't get into bios though. The motherboard light is always on when the power supply switch is set to on. The system fan however starts up when i press the power button. Could it be the adapter going from my videocard to my monitor?
 
So I've finally managed to start up my computer, but it turns off very quickly. I have managed to get into BIOS once, but then it turned off. If I have just plugged it into the power, it stays on longer. So, the colder it is, the longer it stays on. I don't have a CPU(Processor) fan because the stupid guy at the tigerdirect store sold me one that doesn't fit on my motherboard. The Golden Orb II. Do I need a CPU fan in order to make my computer run? Is it my power supply that isn't taking the load? I also should note that my other computer is running while i try to boot it up? Could my outlet just not have enough power going to the power bar? As soon as the computer starts to get hot, it shuts off. Thanks for the help. I'm so close I can taste my Delicious 4gigs of RAM. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. RAMMY.
 
well it's only ever stayed on for 45 seconds at the most. Is it the fan and heatsync that I need then? I'm really pissed that the guy sold me a heatsync that won't fit. IDIOT.... On my old computer(that I'm on now) there is a fan over the CPU but it's an AMD. Would a decent $30 fan for my E6600 work, because I can go out an get one. I have to take the motherboard out though don't I? Is my power supply fine? I think i need a box like fan because the golden orb 2 is a circular fan and it cannot go in as the chipset fan is in the way? Has anybody here with the nForce 680i SLI ever used the golden orb 2? What makes me really mad is that I asked for the E6600(with heatsync) but he insisted that I get the golden orb 2. $40 for something that ended up making my computer worse. Now I'm going to have to take my computer apart again just to put this dam fan in.

A couple of questions about the CPU fan. Should the bottom of the fan actually touch the top of the processor? Is that why you need thermal glue? PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP!!! I really want to get this thing running?

Is the power supply fine, and the problem is the fan, or neither? PLEASE I'm dying here I really want to get this thing running!

No. The bottom of the fan touches the top of the heatsink. The bottom of the heatsink touches the top of the processor and that is why you need thermal glue between the bottom of the heatsink and top of processor.

45 seconds is amazing considering the hotness of the E6600... And YES you DEFINITELY need it. Even old Pentium Pros and 486's needed one. AMDs and Intels all need a fan. Even Apple CPUs and Cyrixs. You do not need to take the motherboard out. Usually its a clip you just have to clip on. Easy. Any cooler will work. I would recommend an Intel certified one to be on the safe side. An non-intel certified heatsink can damage the CPU if it does not work well or not efficient enough. All power supplies have fans, so your power supply is supposedly fine, unless it is defective (we have no real way of knowing until your computer has a heatsink/fan). The chipset fan can be a problem. That is why before buying any HSF you need to check the dimensions with your motherboard. YES the Heatsink needs to touch the CPU. Otherwise, the heat cannot travel from the CPU to the heatsink, therefore, it will cause overheating and the automatic shutoffs you are currently experiencing with your computer. You are supposed to put thermal PASTE or GREASE on the CPU (rice sized) and then press the heatsink on and clip the heatsink on. The thermal paste/grease will help transfer heat from the CPU to the heatsink. On some heatsinks, the bottom not be completely flat. The thermal paste will act like the metal and take the place of the unflat part. You will need to get a heatsink and fan before anything. Get the socket of your motherboard and we can help from there. Please select your budget too. I would highly recommend you not turn on your computer from now on until you have gotten and correctly installing and applied the thermal paste/grease and heatsink/fan. I recommend 40+CFM fan for this processor if you are not overclocking, and 50+ if you are. CFM means cubic feet/minute. It measures how much the fan blows. The higher the CFM the more air the fan moves. I would recommend Arctic Silver 5 for the thermal paste, which is around $5.50 on ebay. (remember RICE SIZED, if you do not apply the correct amount the processor temperatures may rise). And yes, the problem is the fan. As I have said, we will not be able to know if the power supply is working or not until you have gotten an Heatsink and thermal compound (paste/grease). ]

Does the Golden Orb have a bracket with it? I know bigger coolers sometimes have brackets that you use on the underside of the motherboard to keep it in place.
 
why dont you use the stock heatsink that comes with processor if it is oem then since you have a overclockable processor and motherboard i would get this

newegg charges way to much money but this is gonna get ur pc the coldest the cheapest and it is a really good fan and you can overclock pretty good on it to.. id get this if i was you but if you can spend more money get a zalmon 9700
 
golden orb should be able to fit on there some how and if you buy the artic cooler freezer pro 7 buy some artic silver 5 thermal paste
