Can't power video card?

Im confused on why and how you just dumped 700 dollers into a computer and what not and have so much resistance to buy a new PSU, there a small fraction of the investment and will in the long run if nothing else give you peace of mind, and you will have another powersupply lying around if you ever wana make another computer or something.

I my self learned a lot reading this thread, i have a 4 year old pc with a 585 watt Orion PSU, its running my 6850....it seems to be fine but now i'm wondering if i should upgrade my psu....i don't know if Orion is a crap company or what, but its been dependable for 4 years, and i don't think its going to make my system fail. any ideas?

sorry to ask a question on someone elses thread!

but thanks!

Hey cdsdwarf, i would start a new topic in the psu section, im not familiar with orion, so someone else will have to tell you the specifics. but starting your own thread may warrant more replies.

Just start a new thread over on the psu part and find out exactly what your model and make is and add that to your thread, that way anyone helping can tell you off the bat wether you should potentially get a new psu or wether or not your safe.

+1 to what was said by everyone else. johnb is probably one of the most helpful and knowledgeable people on this forum.

I GOT MY POWER SUPPLY MODEL! :) it's a Besta PT-550 and it's actually 550W. So will it be ok with a adapter of 6 pin ? From 4 pin?

you could try it, and im sure it will work for some time, but as others have stated already, dont be mad when your entire PC gets F%$#&@ up! in time im sure thats what will happen. spend the extra maney, you wont regret it.

hahahha that card can just run a 7900GT .... and that card is from 05/06. If you don't change your PSU, i hope your computer blows up because your so ignorant, and stubborn.

Yes it is. And my 6870 requires 2-6pin connectors. And I hope that you aren't mad at anyone of us. We are only trying to get you to understand the difference between good and bad psu's. You would have definately seen some smoke if you would have ran a 6870 off the psu that came with your system. So afterwards, stick around and learn more about computers and pinch in if you want to helping others.

I must agree with Johnb here too (seems like I am always agreeing with Johnb!)

I knew very little when I first started on the forums. Reading posts, then doing my own research after reading these posts, I found that most of the members here are exactly right based on the information on the internet.

I am also back in college, and this forum has been a huge help for me in my schooling as well.

I hope that you didnt take offense to anything that any of the members said, but each one was just attempting to help in his/her own way.

Glad to see that you are looking into a new PSU though :)

By making more posts. But if they are stupid posts then they will get deleted. Not saying you'll do that but we have found users to do that. This is a great community and you will learn a lot, it just takes time.

I can second what was said on the first page. I bought a Thermaltake kit from Tiger Direct, and it had a 450w in it. Still a decent psu, but I upgraded it right away due to the fact that the kit didn't have a video card with it, so I had purchased an Radeon 5770 HD, which could have supported it, but why bother with the risk. Spend a few bucks extra and get a new one. It will last ya.
