Cant press any key on OS install!!

Well basically as the topic says this is the second time that I have had this issue. Here's what happened I took out my old 40gb IDE drive it has windows 7 on it. I put in a old 250gb sata hard drive. Put windows xp in the drive and got to the blue screen to enter on xp install and I could not press enter or any key. So I took out the 250gb hard drive and put the 40gb IDE drive that had windows 7 then it stated DISK BOOT FAILURE so I put in the windows disk and had the same exact issue. I am thinking both had corrupted versions of windows and buying a new hard drive will fix the issue

somethings to note:
no i dont have a ps2 keyboard
no i can not get in to windows AT ALL
