can't select dial up connection

I reloaded windows XP after a crash but windows couldn't communicate with Microsoft to reactivate the OS. I discovered I was unable to reestablish my dial up connection because that choice was "grayed out", the only option left active was a broadband connection. It would appear special interests have compromised my machine. first, is there another way to establish a dial up connection? second, is there a phone number I can call to accomplish activation?
