My laptop is a couple of months old, it has got Vista on it. It's connected directly to the modem via an ethernet cable, but it just won't connect. I've ran the connections wizard and created a new internet connection, but still no luck. The thing worked just fine on my desktop computer, but it had XP on it... so I know it's not the internet provider or the cable that are broken. help.....

Has the laptop got the correct Ethernet port drivers installed? Check in device manager. Also what is shown when you go to Control panel > Classic View > Network and sharing center?

Ok all seems well there, how is your computer configured for the network, it is a static IP you are using or DHCP?

If you are unsure go to Control panel > Classic View > Network and sharing center > Manage network connections > right click on the LAC you wish to use and go to properties. In the Items window highlight IPv4 and click the properties button.

Get some screen shots or tell me what you see, if you are planning on using DHCP then make sure the Obtain IP and DNS are set to auto then click on advanced... and check that DHCP is enabled.

Cool, that looks fine too. For a test can you disable Zonealarm firewall then right click on the network icon in your tray (next to the time bottom right of the screen). Then click diagnose and repair, let it do that without the firewall enabled and then post back.
