Can't Share a Printer

Hi
I was on these forums asking about a router. Well I have purchased it and tried to set it up. I can share the internet between the desktop and laptop with the router and a USB adapter for the desktop. However when I went to share the printer which is connected to the desktop it wouldn't come up on the laptop saying it has lost it's connection to the server. I can access the internet well and the connection is good. Both are connected to the same network. I'm not great with computers so if you can help it would be great.

1. - Make sure both computers are under the same workgroup.
2. - Make sure both computers have sharing enabled.

They are the key points in checking, and then see if you can do it again.

Tried both of the above however it hasn't helped. The desktop shows the files shared and the laptop as part of the workgroup but can't see that on the laptop. On the laptop when I want to add the printer I can see the workgroup but when I type in the printer name it won't allow it. On the laptop it also has the local area connection under network connections saying a cable is unplugged but I thought it's wireless? The wireless network connection and 1394 connection and connected. Don't understand.

Have you gone into "Setup a home or small office network" under Network Connections? (assuming XP).

You need to run that on every machine.

If you have devices connected by WiFi, DO NOT be tempted to use the "Setup a wireless network" link, make sure you run the link mentioned above.

Once this is done on all machines, and all machines have the same workgroup name, you should be able to share the files and printers you wish.

You may need to double check your firewalls, particularly any non Microsoft ones, as the setup does not correct any firewalls such as NORTON for you - You need to go into norton and allow the network access to the machine by adding the IP range or subnet into the firewall settings.
