When I launch the game I first get an error with this detail:

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just in time (JIT) debugging, the config file for this
application or machine (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

<configuration>
<system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the machine
rather than being handled by this dialog.

Then I get to the small starting screen where you can select what you want to start but when I chose an option it says that a graphic error occured and it won't let me start the game. It says it usually occurs when settings are set too high and that I should lower it down. Thing is I didn't even get to the possibility of changing that in the options...

I have a GeForce 409 with an I3 and 6GB of RAM running on a Win7 64 bit.

Thanks for any help :)

Go to Computer > Program Files(x86) > Steam > Steamapps > Common > MedievalII: Total War > Redist

Run each of the files in here to make sure all of the redist's installed correctly, Steam can sometimes balls it up, which will throw up problems
