Card Compatibility

I am pondering about buying a computer from a friend. It has intel integrated graphics as is (thats no good). The mobo has a PCI express x16 port for graphics. The latest card that newegg has for that port is the HD2400pro. Well thats not much better either.
so my question is... if i get a 2.0 x 16 card, like a 5770 would it be backward compatible?

What motherboard does it have? If it has a pci-express x 16 port then any pci-express card will work as they are backwards compatible, though a little slower.

i havent looked at it yet. Its a HP business class desktop model dc7700. Its a c2d at at 2.6 and pci express x16.

PCI-E 2.0 is totally backwards compatible. 2.0 is technically double the speed, but you wouldn't notice the difference between the two, as we haven't even come close to filling up all the bandwidth it provides.

Alsi, if it's an HP, you're going to need a new power supply if you get a new card. The one's including with OEM builds are a bit lacking, to say the least.

EDIT: After a quick google, it would appear that it is not only an HP (Which is unfortunate enough :P) but may also be a mini-tower. Getting a decent power supply, much less graphics card for that form factor will probably be quite the task if it is in fact the mini version.

It will work. Its the same case as the D530CMT that I had. I mounted a ATX 500 Watt PSU without much trouble in it, so it should fit the new one too.
