card vs cable vs wireless

Not sure if this is the right place, i think it is. I am wondering if anyone can tell me the normal transfer speeds for a wireless card, using an ethernet cable straight to the router, and using wireless with a router.

Re: Wireless - it depends on your signal strength - and the technology you are using. Internet speed is also a factor of your service provider's D/L - Upload speed.

Cat 5 Ethernet - 100 mBits / s ( you don't have to worry about signal strength like wireless )
Wireless G - 19 - 54 mbits / s
Wireless N - 130 - 600 mitb/s ( I think it's twice the range of Wireless G )
 
wait so if you have a strong signal with the wireless router it can be faster than using a cable?
Depends on alot of things, if your talking internet speed it wont be affected by the transfer rate of the cable/wifi as long as its .11g or better, but wired will give less latency. If you have cat5e or cat6, and gigabit switches/network cards/router than you can have 1000mbit transfer rates, much faster than via wireless.
 
when you say .11g what does the g mean in that? sorry im just trying to get more educated lol. and im so confused. in Jamins post did he mean 1000 mbits/s with the ethernet cord? or does he actually mean 100 like he put?
 
generally speaking, cable always gives u better signal and more stable than wireless. .11g or 802.11g is just a standard for wireless router. There are other standards: 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11a/b, 802.11g and 802.11n. The latter has more bandwidth than the former (or earlier).

The most popular standard atm is 802.11g. If u have a 802.11g wireless card, u can catch wireless signal from older router which uses 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11a/b ...
