CAS Latencies

I often see RAM with timings such as 4-4-4-12 or 5-5-5-15. I know that the lower times are better, but what does each individual number mean? Also, why is it normally that the first 3 numbers are generally the same and then the last number is 3 times the others?

Just wondering...thanks!
 
Corsiar memory offers just the right guide for this. A CAS 4 for example means that you wait 4 clock cycles instead of the 5 seen with a CAS 5 latency. That doesn't always mean that everything runs 20% faster while you will see a performance boost.

The 14, 11, 12 last digit represents the PreCharge delay. Tom's Hardware has a good reference to look over as well seen at http://www.tomshardware.com/2004/01/19/ups_and_downs/page3.html
 
And those were only a pair there. A few older online document white paper types go into lengthy detail with math formulas seen to explain the theory as well as the basics covered in those two. Those there simply made things a little easier to follow. Glad they helped.
