i have a gateway case from 1998 and well it work for a atx motherboard it is a mid sized case and what is the different between matx and atx?
 
Usually a full tower scan upport ATX and sometimes mATX
Mid-Tower or Small Form Factor case support mATX
HTPC support both ATX and mATX

If it is from 1998 it will probably be ATX.
 
It's hard to call, computers from 1998 is vastly different from computers today. It's hard to guess whether your case supports standard ATX/matx motherboards. You could try buying a motherboard first and seeing if it fits or not. If not, then you can buy a case.
