Catastrophic HD Failure?

I'm not very computer literate, but I think the HD on my Asus u50a laptop has just failed suddenly. Here is what happened:

1. I turn on the computer and I get a message that reads, "Reboot and Select proper Boot Device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key."

2. I inserted the 1st recovery disk, and I get a message that reads, "No had drive has been detected for recovery. The recovery process will not continue. They system will now power off." It never really does power off, I have to take the battery out for that to occur.

3. I called Asus support. She tried several things like checking the Boot Priority and turning off Quiet Boot (I think that was the term). She also tried to set the machine back to it's original state. Nothing worked. In the end, she wanted me to send it to them b/c she thought that HD had failed.

Here are my questions:

1. Is there anything else that can be done, besides buying a new HD?

2. If I have to buy a new HD, how do I reinstall the OS from the recovery disks? Do I have to press a Function Key like F2 or F8 (I assume it's one of those two). Then I assume I just follow any prompts that are giving to me, yes?

Does the bios detect a hard drive? If not, take the hard drive out and try hooking it up to a desktop pc and see it gets detected. If it gets detected then you have an issue with the laptop itself. If it doesn't get detected then its a bad hard drive. Take the cover off so you can see the hard drive and try booting up, can you hear the drive spin up? Does it make any clicking noise?

You don't need to put it in the drive cage, just attach it and see if it gets detected.

No, just take the side panel off, attach a data and power cable to it, turn pc on and see if it the bios detects it.

I didn't check to see if the BIOS saw it, however, when I went to MY Computer, nothing different showed up. Also, when I turned the computer on, the new HD made a constant beeping noise for a few minutes, then stopped. It was exactly like what was happening in my laptop, however, this time it stopped. On the laptop, it would stop every few minutes, but then start up again.

Haha....no kidding.

I put in a new HD into the laptop, it's working great now. I'm going to guess the problem was with the old HD. I guess it just failed suddenly. I wish I knew why.

HDD's are mechanical devices which can go out at any time from day 1 on. Glad to see you are back up again.
