CD Burner problem

I have windows xp 64 . I am trying to burn cds but the softwares using says that there is no device connected. The problem is that microsoft is installing its own driver for my cd burner and only display it as a regular cd-rom and not cd-rw drive. I been trying to erase their drivers with no luck because it keeps coming back. And whenever I try to install a new driver from the cd that came with the burner for it, it says that I have the best driver for the current device. Any suggestions?

have you tried using the properties menu-> select harware tab-> select device and properties. Under the driver tab, there is an option to update the driver at which point you will tell it not to connect to windows update and select exactly where the driver you downloaded is.
