CD Drive randomly opening on its own

Anybody ever ran into this issue? The CD drive randomly opens on its own, and it will close itself. I tried uninstalling the drive and re-installing it and still the same thing.

You may have a batch file or something similar running on your system that is doing it. You may want to think about running malware/virus scans and posting the logs from malwarebytes and hijackthis.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here or here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Please keep updating until it says you have the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • A log will be saved automatically which you can access by clicking on the Logs tab within Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

If you continue to experience problems after doing this, please post a HijackThis log by doing the following:

Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log

Ran the Malwarebyte's and it came up with 6 infections, fixed those, but the cd drive is still opening. I will try hijackthis and see what comes up. Here is the log from Malwarebyte's:

I was going through my running processes in the task manager and i noticed i had 8 to 10 processes of "svchost.exe." I searched it in processlibrary.com and saw that it is a critical windows process, but also that some of them were viruses or trojans. Is it possible that one of these is the critical process, and the others are trojans?

How long has it been doing this?

I don't see anything suspicious in the log but lets go a little deeper.

Download and Run ComboFix
If you already have Combofix, please delete this copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.

In your next reply please post:
  • The ComboFix log
  • A fresh HiJackThis log
  • An update on how your computer is running

I will note, the ComboFix did take more than 20 minutes including the reboot. It was about 25 to 30 minutes once the log showed up, but I have a feeling this could just be that this computer is about 8 years old, and its really just time for a new one. Nothing has changed with the operation of the computer after ComboFix. The CD drive is still opening and closing and startup is a little sluggish. This is my mothers computer and it is cluttered with all sorts of useless programs, and she has a tendency to download infectious programs and things just coming from not knowing much about computers and spyware and the likes. Also note, I started the computer in safe mode and the CD drive continued to open on its own. This problem has been going on for about 6-8 weeks

Sorry, meant to post the ComboFix log first. Had to post it in 2 posts as there were too many characters:

Ok. Let's start by disabling some processes on startup. Rerun hijacthis and place checks next to the following entries.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdateManager] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sonic\Update Manager\sgtray.exe" /r
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ISUSPM Startup] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\isuspm.exe" -startup
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ISUSScheduler] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\issch.exe" -start
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe ARM] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\ARM\1.0\AdobeARM.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java\Java Update\jusched.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe"
O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\System32\ctfmon.exe (User 'SYSTEM')
O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\RunOnce: [tscuninstall] %systemroot%\system32\tscupgrd.exe (User 'SYSTEM')
O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\System32\ctfmon.exe (User 'Default user')
O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\RunOnce: [tscuninstall] %systemroot%\system32\tscupgrd.exe (User 'Default user')
O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Gamma Loader.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Calibration\Adobe Gamma Loader.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Windows Search.lnk = C:\Program Files\Windows Desktop Search\WindowsSearch.exe

Then click on fix checked at the bottom.

Then next I need you to upload a file to virus total and give me the link to the result.

Upload this file

c:\windows\system32\763F33D79C.sys

to here

http://www.virustotal.com/

and then when you get the result just copy and paste the link to the result in a reply.

Stay with me, there are more things we can try.

Ok, that file is good.

Have you performed the hijackthis fixes? Reboot the system and see if the cd drive continues to open and close.

If it does, do this. Click start, click on run, type "msconfig" without the quotes and click ok. When the configuration utility pops up click on the startup tab and click on disable all, click apply, click ok. Then reboot the system and see if it still continues to open and close. By doing this we have diagnosed that its not a software issue. If its still opening and closing then its a bad drive.

I did everything you said in your last post and it is still doing it, so hopefully the software issue has been ruled out. I will buy a new drive and see what happens
