CD & DVD drive help appreciated

Hello, I have a Sony Vaio PCV-RS 320 with a DVD-RW/CD-RW and also a regular CD-ROM drive. Suddenly, both drives stopped working at once. I get the feeling my roommate was trying to install a new DVD program, however I am not sure. Anyway, the drives still open and function physically, however they are just not recognized by the computer. For example, when I click on My Computer, they aren't even on the list with my hard drives and such. I am running Windows XP Home and any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Edit: My drives are as follows: Samsung CD-ROM SC-140C and Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-R5002.

The Samsung's properties (in device manager) say: Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)

Toshiba: Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)

The troubleshoot could not solve the problem.

okay if you can unplug your drives and then re install them. then use your windows xp disc to restore and repair the registry. Now reinstall any drivers you had for the drives, this should get windows recognising the drives, good luck.
