yeh so i got windows XP, no service packs or anything (28k internet)
And my cd/dvd drive says its got a disc in it permanently(which it doesnt)

I can still use it if i go to explore but yeh i cant write to it.

If i click eject it ejects the drive but still says that it has a disk in it.
If i put a blank cd in it and click explore then i click write to cd, it opens the cd writing wizard then says that theres no re-writeable disk in the drive

Its extremely annoying any help?

Never heard of that one before. Well, let's start off with a 2 questions. Is this a laptop or pc? If it's prebuilt, maybe the brand and model number of your laptop/pc. What is the brand of your cd/dvd drive? model number also if you happen to know.

Um its a custom built one, made about 3 months ago

Dunno if it helps but it is a diamond ultra sli motherboard, with a 200mb matrox hdd a 3700 san diego AMD cpu and 1 gig or ram

The brand of cd drive is Lite-onbut i cant seem to find the number on it, it writes cd's and can read dvd's but not write them

thanks

i wouldn't be surprised if it was because you are lacking SPs on XP. The retail XP was dirty and problematic.
my suggestion: even if it takes you forever, you have got to update your pc.
my friend did it with the same kind of speed your talking about, little by little, one update at a time.

Thanks for the extra info. Did that problem recently occured or did it occured when you built it? 3 months ago.

Like Marzeth said, updating to the latest patches can be one solution. The updates from Microsoft help cover issues and holes that can be exploited so that can be one. If you can get on a broadband connected PC via friends oro families and download some updates such as SP2 and install it on yours, that will be a good idea. Microsoft may also have hardware and software updates for you too.

Lite-On are pretty good brands as far as drives go. There can be firmware updates for the drive.. Have you looked into this yet?
