cd / dvd drive problem

hello,

Just wondering if anyone could help at all, on my one pc, if i unplug my CD writer, and try to plug in any other cd / dvd drive, the pc starts up, but then the task manager shows services.exe (or something) taking up 99% of the CPU (so needless to say th PC runs incredibly slow). I've tried pluggin the drives in with jumpers and without, but nothing works. Nor will 2 drives work at the same time (same prioblem as above). This isn't the 1st time that i've had this problem, nor is it only on this pc, - it always starts up + logs on, then when th bubble says: 'found CD/DVD drive' everything goes really slow. The only way that i have found to solve this problem is a complete re-install of windows XP. I know that it's not a problem with the drives because they all work fine on their original PCs, and have tried changing the IDE cables, (doubt its this thought as its not only happened on the 1 pc).

can anyone help please?

thanks for any help

failing HDD, bad install, corrupted files, or jsut aplain virus. or the CD drive may be having a conflict with another piece of hardware.
