CD Key required for CSS?

Hey guys,
I am going to a lan party next week and have a question. The game is going to be CSS. My friend has the HL2 so it comes with it. My question is, can I install the game without creating a STEAM account? If not then I could play without having to buy it, no multiplayer of course, but oh well!
 
If you're friend has a copy of CSS, he has to install it on his steam account. You can log onto the same account, but you cant play on the same server, since it only allows one steam account to be on the same server at the same time.

So the only way to play CSS against someone else is if you both have a copy of the game.

Actually to be honest i'm not sure how it would work in LAN, since i'm pretty sure it needs an internet connection to play any type of multiplayer game, so you may need to have internet access to make a LAN game. But again, I never tried it so I dont know for sure.
