cd-r or cd-r audio, dvd-r or dvd-r video

What’s the deference between cd-r and cd-r audio?
I have burnt audio on a data cd and it has worked on all my cd players so why do they have a separate cd-r audio disk?

Also they have separate dvd-r for data and video I have also burnt video on a dvd-r data disc and it has worked.
Please explain:confused:

I have seen tones of burnt music disks done on data cd's
I sell home hifi and home theater products we have got about 5 data cd with music for work we use it to demo our stock, they are burnt on data cd's not audio cd’s and they all work on all our produces.
Unless there is a good reason I may stick with data cd’s

I don't know of any difference, but here's an interesting quote I found online...

The reason these discs cost more is that there is a Tariff included in the price of the audio cd. This was imposed by the RIAA, I believe, just as it was done with audio DAT tape. They collect money on these formats ASSUMING that you and I will be using this to copy copywritten material, and they want money for that.

again, they're for standalone burners

they have the lead-in on the disc already, as well as a proprietary pre-flag that allows the disc to be written on a standalone player, as well as tying in to the 1-copy duplication rules.

with a standalone player, you can make a copy of an original source, but you wont be able to make a copy of a copy.

who cares, the entire technology failed miserably.

pc-based cd-recorders outnumber standalones 5,000,000,000,000 to 1
