CD Rom Drive Not Recognized

Hello,

I run Windows XP on a Dell desktop. Just yesterday I replaced the CD Rom which was not working with a new DVD Recorder. The unit is not being recognized. It is not to be seen on My Computer, however it does appear in the Device Manager but with a yellow exclamation point. All the latest drivers were downloaded but the computer still doesn't see it and the message is that I should install the device.

I also suspect that the original cd rom was ok since I remember seeing a message while in itunes, while trying to burn a cd that the CD rom was either not found or the burner software was not found. What can I do with this situation ?

Thank you in advance.

Thoth

If its a IDE drive are you sure you set the Master/Slave jumper right. If there is more than one drive on the cable one needs to be master/one slave.

Try going into your device manager. Go to the IDE controller that the burner is on ( not the burner itself) the IDE controller, right click on it, click uninstall and then reboot. Windows will redetect the controller and reinstall it. See if it shows up in My Computer then.

Other than trying to swap the IDE cable out (might be bad). Maybe try another power connector. Does the drive have power/ drive will open tray/ light comes on. If you have a open connector on another IDE cable try it on that one. If all else fails it could be a bad drive, return the drive and swap it out for another one.

Yes the drive has power, light comes on, tray opens up real nice. I'll try your other suggestions and see what happens. I'll let you know. Thanks for your help - appreciate it !

Well I got a new drive, swapped it for the other "new" one. Did all the plugging up, checked and re-checked everything - and I still have the same problem. I'm thinking maybe a registry problem ? Something more than just the obvious.

Did you try right clicking on it in Device Manager and hit update driver? If that doesn work try the same thing to the drive that you tried with the IDE channel. Right click on it hit uninstall and reboot.

Yes I tried everything I did with the previous drive based on your suggestions. During one of the attempts, the computer did recognize new hardware but it didn't last long, almost immediately I got the message that the device was not found.

Could I have a bad IDE port ?

Thanks

For those of you that have the same problem, below are the steps you may want to try. It worked for me and I now have my CD drive in perfect working order.

Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit in the Programs list.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.

Locate, and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Caution There can be many instances of the registry subkey that is mentioned in step 2. You must make sure that you are in the appropriate registry subkey before modifying the UpperFilters and the LowerFilters values. To verify that you are in the appropriate registry subkey, make sure that the Default data value is DVD/CD-ROM and the Class data value is CDROM.

In the right pane, right-click UpperFilters*, and then click Delete.
Click Yes to confirm the removal of the UpperFilters registry entry.

In the right pane, right-click LowerFilters*, and then click Delete.
Click Yes to confirm the removal of the LowerFilters registry entry.

Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

*You may only see UpperFilter or LowerFilter, and not both. This is ok, still delete whatever ones you see.
