Hi i have a problem with my cd rom drive. My problem is that under the device manager properties the comput recognizes that their is a cd rom drive and there is no exclamation points stating that there is a problem. When i press the cd tray to open it so i can insert a cd the computer starts to freezes up and not respond and the current program would freeze. The cd rom drive does not open. I tried to open the computer and unplug the cd rom cord from the back of the drive and and wait 10 second and reinsert the cord back but that did not work. I am using windows xp.

Cdrom drives do go out from time to time. If this is an old drive, its time to replace it. If this is a new drive and its still under warranty then get it replaced. Try putting the drive in a different computer to rule out computer problem.

Um...are you using SATA or IDE? Not that it'll really help your problem, but you're not supposed to disconnect IDE drives while the computer's running.

Anyway, sounds like you have a dead drive. If it causes your machine to freeze up for a little bit, that's pretty much a tell-tale sign of failure. To confirm this, you could always try it on another channel or in another computer.

Drives can be had for pretty cheap now. I just built a computer and my DVD±RW was $30 with free shipping off Amazon. There are probably even cheaper ones around if you look.

You could always try using the Emergency release button press it with a pin :)
Then insert a CD and see if the drive will still work (Probably not but worth a go)

Other option but a new drive they are cheap nowadays so it shouldnt be to big of a problem! :)
