CD rom not working anymore

This isn't for me, but it is for my dad. He is computer savy, but apparently not enough. the problem he is having is the fact that his laptop does not recognize is drive anymore and it isn't in the control panel anymore either. He can't open the drive at all to. He has tried rebooting his computer and going through the control panel. Can someone please help him. I think the rom is bad, but I don't know if may be just an easy fix.

The laptop he currently has is the acer aspire 5810tz-4761. This is just in case anyone else has had a problem with either acer or just the model.

He has even tried downloading a new driver for it, but his laptop says that he currently has the most current driver for his computer. He also says that it was the new windows 7 update that messed it up since he last used the rom on sunday. He also says that many people say that they are also encountering problems with this new update as well.

What does device manager show? Is all ok in there? If so, its almost certain his DVD Writer is dead. Fit another one, not a hard job really.

If Device Manager shows a Yellow exclamation mark then its a registry jobbie. Once again not that hard to do. Come back to us if you need help with this.

He says that the driver is not there. sometimes when he reboots the computer, it shows for a brief moment and then it suddenly goes away. Before windows boots up completely though, he can open and close his cd rom. after windows boots completely it can't do anything else it: can't open at all.

when windows boots up completely, the rom shows up as a removeable device. when he tries to use or remove, the device says that it is already in use.

If its truly an update that caused this then do a system restore to before the update was installed.
