i have a generic 56x cdrom drive that worked fine untill about a week ago. everytime i try to play a cd or any game i get the blue screen of death that says "machine check exception" or something. ive tried reinstalling the drivers and everything but nothing works. could it be the cdrom just doesnt work anymore or what. i am running xp and ive ran antivirus and spybot, thinking it that might have something to do with it, but my system is clean. any thoughts?

It sounds like you have a definite hardware problem if you seeing that error. It could be due to the drive itself while there are other causes to look at.

"CAUSE
This behavior occurs because your computer processor detected and reported an unrecoverable hardware error to Windows XP. To do this, the processor used the Machine Check Exception (MCE) feature of Pentium processors or the Machine Check Architecture (MCA) feature of some Pentium Pro processors. The following factors may cause this error message: • System bus errors
• Memory errors that may include parity or Error Correction Code (ECC) problems
• Cache errors in the processor or hardware
• Translation Lookaside Buffers (TLB) errors in the processor
• Other CPU-vendor specific detected hardware problems
• Vendor-specific detected hardware problems" http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=329284

Sony cd-r/rw drives have dropped in price and proven themselves reliable over the last several years. If memtest or other diagnostics find no faults with any other hardwares you will looking for a replacement drive. If you do have to go with a replacement there and decide on a Sony go with a model above a CRX220 due to the longer length of the old style casing. The newer CRM225 and above have the shorter casing allowing for use in different 5 1/4" bays without touching the main board. Hopefully it will be the drive since the prices on several brands have fallen.

I ran a 56x cd rom with a lesser known name that lasted only two weeks and simply quit. It was one of the cheapo brands that came out offering 56x speed over the more common 52x24x52. Sony, Plextor, and a few others make some good 48x and 52x drives alike that will take a pounding and last for years. But the MS article there is one to take note of. I've seen that error come up on different makes and models at times where the hardware was still good. Try running the drive on a different connector if not on the same as the hard drive or with a different cable to see if that helps.
