celeron m or pentium m processor

i am looking to buy a laptop for school and my main purpose for it is school work and burning cds and dvds, surfing the web and music which is better for the money? and better technology?

The pentium M is far superior, it works much faster on a clock for clock basis. However, its pricy, and for you are doing the Celeron M would work fine. Its really up to you though.

u want a nice small screen so it is portable obviously the pm is better but for anything but pricey the celeron is rubbish if u want to do to much but for word processing it will be more than adequate. i couldnt look past apples 12" book though... i dont usually like macs but this one is good

generally a pentium M or an amd turion would be a better investment if you plan to use the computer in a few years in college. it should last a couple years if you don't plan to do any gaming on it.

For the tasks you listed the celeron-m is fine
but the p-m will run rings around the celeron-m, its better value and better "technology"

A common misconception, what's wrong with them? The Celeron CPU's definitely have their place, it's all about the intention of the system...

i've used semprons, P4's, Celerons, Celeron D's, and ahtlon 64's, and the celeron just sucks. It runs hot, has very low cache, is very slow, and really sucks in games. If you want a celeron or sempron, get a sempron, for really any task.

yes you are right about that my dad has a celeron 2.2 ghz in his dell computer(he couldnt wait for the pentium m for the laptops and he has regreteded it) and it takes 5 min to load up so you can use it then it works ok but only for word and internet if i game with it it wont work. but maybe the semprons would be better.

yes they have a place there place should be in a garbage can. they may be good for internet and word but only if one thing is open at a time you cant have a lot of background tasks going or your computer will be really slow. and they dont have big cache sizes. thats whats wrong with them

Celeron M TDP 5 - 24.5W
Mobile Sempron TDP 25 - 62W

Is that an issue here?

Do you actually believe he'll notice a difference in his tasks?

i havent used the celeron m's, but the celerons and celeron d's really do suck, i dont know if you've used them before, but it takes a while to load up windows, and apps go very slow.

For those tasks, the CeleronM will suffice :)

The pentium M is far superior, it works much faster on a clock for clock basis.
Its superior yes but it's not clock-for-clock more efficient since they both run on the same architecture

Now that was nearsighted..... (not to mention the chip is a CeleronM not a Celeron -- and yes there is a distinction)

get the pentium M dont ever buy a celeron
Good thing its not a Celeron.

A common misconception, what's wrong with them? The Celeron CPU's definitely have their place, it's all about the intention of the system...
A lot of other things are common too

1. It runs just as hot (if not slightly less) than the Pentium chip of its series
2. Very low cache? Have you considered post #1?
3. Look at post #1. Sure they dont hit 3billion fps but they certainly hold their ground in games.
4. Id you READ the chip in question isnt a Celeron
(psst, if you ever wondered what i mean when i say "technical aspects" for Moderator positions, this would be one of them)

yes they have a place there place should be in a garbage can.
Apologies to openminded 15 year olds :D

Theres some truth there :)

i dont know if you've used them before, but it takes a while to load up windows, and apps go very slow.
Strange ... i only plan on starting Windows once in awhile.

what do you mean read up on it and sorry ill use the edit button
He means "before you open your mouth to bash a product, make sure you know what you're talking about" (not to mention, read the topic so that you bash the appropriate product)

Yes I have. And I still do.

Since music important to him let see how the cpu compare with encoding wave to mp3.

http://www.mobilityguru.com/2004/03...rino/page9.html

notice this is ~8% from each other which is with in the range of the .1 speed advantage of the P-M. There are definally things that the P-M much better for but the type of things he doing the ceoron M is fine.
Remind me to buy you a beer ... gotta love it when people see Celeron and their "Im-not-gonna-think-critically-visors" come on
