celeron VS Pentium 4

Hey guys. I have a question, I just finished building my 1st PC, and my P4 was bad for some reason, it would work for a while then it would make my computer restart at random times, so we threw a celeron 2.4 GHZ in it, and that's what I'm running right now.. So my question is; is it worth it to pay 200 dollars for a Pentium 4 3.0 GHZ, 800MHz fsb, 1mb L2 cache. How much difference in speed would I notice, along the lines of playing games and opening folders and windows, and playing music... Thanks in advance

Your computer shutting down like that is more likely a bios setting or something wrong with your psu. For example if your cpu hits a high temp it would shut your computer down. Celerons are garbage for games and there just garbage anyways. The pentium4 would be a much better choice. I would go with an athlon64 but im assuming you got an intell board.
Celeron: Garbage for everything
Pentium4: Best for file seaching, web, music that sorta stuff
Athlon64: Best for gaming and video stuff.

Celerons are Shit ;.....
it all depends on what you want from a processor. Agreed that there not the most powerful but they do occupy a niche area for price, power, consumption, heat output. It all a matter of the mix that you need

i dont think zerosweet wanted to start a debate on which brand of processor is best... i think there's already a thread on that elsewhere.

anyway, i would say that the P4 would be far superior than the celeron due to the faster bus speed, higher cache and higher clock.... just make sure you have good cooling and a power supply that can handle it. :)

Not necessarily.

You could put it this way, i had a AMD duron 1.2Ghz, and then i got a Intle Celeron D 2.8Ghz, and it runs like crap and im switching back to my old Duron1200Mhz. At least i got the Celeron for free by signing up with a frys credit card.

The biggest improvement would be in the gaming area.

Ok so you seriously prefer the Duron 1200 over a Celeron D 335 2.8GHz PC533fsb with 256KB L2?

Your loss...

no way, p4's are great for pretty much any use, and they are also good for gaming, amd are better, but you can still play games at highest settings. A 600Mhz celeron can do the stuff u just listed. lol

Both chips suck to begin with. THe celeron D really sucks, and the duron really sucks also. So you won't notice any difference between the two as much as a Pentium 4 to an AMD 64. But theoretically the Celeron D should've been way faster. Something is wrong there...

Well you could put it this way - Just because you had a bad experience with a Celeron CPU dosen't mean it's crap. I have a Celeron as a second computer and it's perfect for what I use it for.

Here again - the celeron D is recognized as a budget CPU, if that's what you need then how does that suck? Take my case as an example.

Well I'm sure its the processor, we have tested it on 2 separate motherboards, with new ram, and old ram, in separate computers. the computers all mess up when the processor is put inside. My motherboard holds a P4 just fine...

the wierd thing is back in the days my amd 200mhz is faster than my friends celeron 333mhz LOL i remember amd used to be faster than intels.

Yup, all i know is my PC runns like crap now. I though intels were good for multitasking?thiss one wasn't I usally see slower preformance when loading things, but when already loaded then seem to be a little faster, like in gaming. But I prefer the loading faster becuase there is more of a difference.

And yeah i was pretty pissed. If someone can get it to run good i'll be pretty happy and i'll give you a reword of a 56k Modom lol.

my mini cooper is crap because my ferrari can beat it, but my ferrari is pants because it cant make a slice of toast!!!

Celerons are different processors used for differing tasks, on extremely differing budgets, this makes it no more or less crap than my humble mini.

(point to note i dont actually own a ferrari - but you already guessed that. Oh but i do have a toaster)
