CF device locks PC

I just connected a Compact Flash to IDE to the ATA cable.
Instructions say this is completely driverless, but my XP locks up on boot.

I already tried all jumper settings on this thing.
Is there anything I'm doing wrong here?

is this a compact flash card reader??

Of a sort. It connects to and IDE socket, like a hard drive would.
The adapter allows it to read from a flash card, instead of a hard disk.

It is made by Syba, so I may have to try another brand.

Oh, then you can't. This is odd, as most card readers usually use internal USB hookups, then pass them on to the front ports, never have I seen an IDE card reader. You may be SOL with this model.

This is not a card reader. It is an adapter.
It is advertised to work under Win 2000 and XP.

I tried it in many different way, the adapter does not work in 2000 or XP.

It *does* work in Win 98. Wahooooo !!!!!!!!

I didn't try Win 95 or DOS 6.2 or Win 3.11 but I am assuming they work there.
