Change CPU

Hello I own a Packard Bell iMedia D4711NCD computer and I would like to replace my current CPU which is Pentium(r) dual-core CPU E5700 3.00 Ghz to a Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400 2.66GHz

The question is if I can replace it, because I don't want to buy a CPU before knowing if it can fit in to my computer.

It's really hard to find information on that model.

Best I can find is that is has a G41 motherboard.....the G41 chipset itself does support 1333 FSB cpu's, but that doesn't mean the board itself will. Sometimes motherboards have TDP (wattage) caps that won't support quads.

Well if you are OK with buying a new motherboard.....just buy the CPU first and see if it works, if it doesn't then buy a new motherboard. Thats really the only way. The good news about getting a new motherboard is then you will have overclocking options as well. You should be able to get atleast 3.2-3.4ghz or so even on the stock cooler on a Q8400.

What are you doing with your PC that you need a quad? The E5700 is actually a pretty good CPU. I'd be inclined to upgrade to a discreet graphics card before the CPU upgrade.

Well i am pretty much of a hardcore gamer, i know how to install everything, on my motherboard and CPU , but i couldn't find this socket, btw, if i got to buy a new motherboard, could u send me a link to a good one, which should be good for gaming and with this socket;)

Sure, I'll give you a link after I get some more information...

What video card do you have?

Also, upgrading to a quad core I really recommend a good power supply. The OEM ones are usually junk. But from what I'm looking up the packard bell power supplies are not easy to replace because they have some weird connections that aren't standard.

Can you crack open the side of your case and look what wattage the power supply is? If it has a label for the amperage pelase tell me what amperage is on the +12v rail. Also, if you could take a pic of the inside that would be great, I need to know a few things and that would answer most of my questions.

I have a Nvidia geforce 315, as a Graphic card/video card, i can't open my case now atm... soz, i'll do that another time..:S I bought, my computer from www.elgiganten.se if u search on imedia D4711 NCD there maybe u should see what i got and what u need ? :O

OK, where are you from? I don't even know what language that is...looks like German is my best guess.

The 315 is OK but not real great. What monitor do you have? And whats it's resolution?

OK I don't know of any websites that sell PC parts there.

What games are you playing? On a 1080p monitor, that Nvidia 315 isn't really going to cut it with any modern games.

The highest video card you can get without needing a 6 pin power connector is a Nvidia GT 440, with DDR5 memory (not the ddr3 model).

I'm just not sure about the power supply in that PC, it's a really dangerous game to upgrade parts with a crappy power supply because if they blow it usually takes out the motherboard and sometimes the video card with it.

Kemoi, upgrading from a Dual core 3GHZ CPU to a Quad 2.66GHZ, you will actually lose game performance. Your gaming at the moment is bottlenecked by your video card. I'd reccomend spending your money on a better GPU first. Later on, if you need more CPU power, buy a new CPU + MOBO + RAM + PSU, otherwise, keep your current rig and upgrade the GPU and possibly your PSU.

I doubt that.

Not all the time. most games that you can play on a Nvidia 315 are more CPU speed dependant than core dependent. Usually, the higher clocked cpus will do better at gaming.

His existing CPU is dual 3GHZ, his new one he wants is quad 2.66, most games use 2 threads if even that, and prefer the clock speed.

Here is a link an old review relevent to his generation of CPUs, and you can clearly see, that higher clock speeds usually end up with higher FPS. With the exception where games can utilize the 4 cores.

Aside from crysis 2, most of those games arent really CPU CORE dependent. A new Video card will improve your gaming leaps and bounds over a new CPU.

Cost of new CPU is about 180, and even then it might not even be compatible.

IF you want a new CPU, you might as well get something current, and that means a new CPU+MOBO+RAM+PSU so save up for that.

If you spend 180 on a new video card, your gaming performance will improve.

you can get a 6850 for that price...

Nah i won't improve, i am not playing crysis 2 that much atm i deleted, it it was jsut a test, i need cpu, and a new motherboard, but i don't know which motherboard i should, choose, for the socket lga775 , a great one for gaming css wow , and league of legends.

Btw, the video card i don't even have pci express 2.0 so i need new motherboard, which could take pci express 2.0 , for a new graphic card, but i need a motherboard with pci express 2.0 ,and lga socket 775 for a new cpu

Hmm, sandy bridge is gonna take several hundred dollars to build a decent PC. The 2500k is $225 alone, and a decent motherboard is around $160-170. So just the CPU and motherboard would be $400.

Plus on top of that, he's not in the states he's in Sweden. I have no idea whats available to him there.

Kemkoi is there a website you know of (thats in english!) that sells PC parts like motherboards and CPU's etc thats in sweden?
