was the xp disk an oem or a full retail?
oem is supposed to be linked to that pc it was sold with, if you bought a full retail copy you have the ability to use it on only one computer but any computer you choose!
in other words
OEM edition you cant
FULL RETAIL yes you can use it (aslong as you have the product key)

Don't blame Vista for your computers lack of hardware.
Vista is an excellent operating system, but it needs a "mature" computer to let it run to it's fullest potential.

A lot is relative. Is 2Gigs a lot? Not really.
My old Socket 939 single core Athlon 64 4000+ would run it perfect with 2Gigs.
Also what's not being considered is all the bloatware that comes with OEM pc's.
That's probably the issue, not Vista.

i think the fact that it "needs" a mature computer to let it run to it's fullest potential knocks it down a peg. and i wouldn't even be saying that if a fully-potent(?) vista totally dominated xp running at its fullest potential. some features are better on vista and some on xp, but vista seems to be only just as good as xp if not worse
but i can be wrong. i'm just speaking based on my experiences with many different versions of xp and many different versions of vista i've tried over the years

That's interesting.
I have both Vista and XP loaded on my Core i7 system and XP is a total turd compared to Vista.
XP runs ok, but there's constant little freezes when opening applications, and even when navigating through Windows Explorer.
Vista is just faster and snappier on my machine.

FYI i was using vista for 1 year with 1 GB of ram, worked just fine but i decided to upgrade to 2GB
and you don't need a mature computer you just need something that's not like 256 MB crappy single core xD
have you used 7? By which I mean full retail, not beta, full retail is much different and much better in every conceivable way.
It is quicker, looks better, is easier to use, has better 64 bit support (XP 64bit was a joke) aswell as everything else XP has, except for the lack of 64 bit support and the the irritating sluggishness when you first open something.

Do you mean XP<Vista<Windows 7? Greater being better?
Can't stand XP, who installs drivers anymore anyway.

Sorry, but that IS the Operating System's fault considering every other modern and major OS can handle itself fine with less hardware specs.
Do you know his hardware specs?

It will run fine on lower spec machines. I have a this laptop and it runs
fine. I said, "to let it run to it's fullest potential".
If the OP had decent hardware, and a clean OS, they wouldn't be hating
on Vista.
That's the only reason Vista fails. Low hardware specs + bloatware.
I think that's why Vista has gotten a bad rap.
In my opinion, of course.
