Changing AGP speed

the program everst is telling me that "Current AGP speed is lower than maximum supported. this may cuase performace penalty". what does this mean? how do i change my agp speed?

this board came with the HP i bought back in 1999
i think is a h7m or something...
if you guys need to know my upgardes on this bad boy feel free to ask! :D
 
Check in your bios. I thought this was normally automatic, but maybe something's set down a bit.

What's it showing as? Something that old, I'd say 4x would be the max speed... Though it could be 2x...
 
well its at 1x and max is 2x... but i think HP blocked that option out or something... i dont get the full option to do anything on the bios setting.
 
you could flash the bios/ give it a firmware update or reset it, perhaps?

That said, if it's a board made in 1999 you're not going to see much difference between it's max support speed and the one you're at now, it's not like switching from 4x to 8x on today's machines.
 
do you actually have an AGP card installed, or is it onboard?

most of the time if you have onboard, it will set anything thats not being used to its lowest settings. if you do, then setting it to 2X won't benefit you at all.

but if you've really got an AGP card installed, thn yes this does appear to be a problem. being an HP, there might not be an option to change this in the BIOS, it might be a dip switch on the mobo itself or a jumper, hard to tell without the manual.
 
perhaps it's set in the bios correctly but not in the cards contorl panel. Right click on desktop and goto settings then advanced. Check out all options and if it'll let you set it higher do so and reboot. If it wont let you set it higher and you now your mobo allows for higher setting then you know it's not enabled on the board. Also this is assuming you of course are using an AGP card as mentioned by 4W4K3.
 
Just checked on wifes pc for actual location. the tab is called SMARTGART(tm). She does not have the Catalyst control centre installed but rather the Catalyst control panel.

So basicly you'd right click desktop and goto properties, settings, advanced, SMARTGART(tm) and set your agp speed.
 
And your sure your board is 4x? then this would mean that your bios is not set up for 4x agp although I believe I read where you said there was not an option in your bios for it? Strange indeedy.

It means the game or whatever is expecting an AGP4x connection (or whatnot) and you've got AGP 2X (or whatever) and thats just slow. As for changing it, you cant since most likely its running at max speed supported

Well thats odd. Shrug. Jump into the BIOS and change the AGP speed to 2X :)

Yeah, the jump from 2X to 4X is much more significant than the jump from 4X to 8X

Had a quick flythrough, didnt see any BIOS method for changing the AGP speed ... maybe its jumper set? (and does yer videocard support AGP2X?)
