Changing ISP's.

Hi,

I am currently using Walmart Connect as my ISP, and have become fed up with the many problems that I have been experiencing with it. DSL is not currently available in our area, so I am looking into going with another low-cost ISP, such as NetZero or Juno. I do like the idea that I would be able to use Outlook with either of those two, and my one real concern is in the regards of viewing quality of graphics. It is to my understanding that the compression used, in the 'accelerated' service, leaves photos and other pics pixelated & fuzzy looking. I guess I am trying to find out just how much they suffer. Also (to anyone using such an accelerated dial-up service) is the stated 5X's faster surfing all that it is cracked up to be? I am not into heavy downloadings, streaming audio or the like - but I would like to be able to breeze through my site surfings somewhat faster.

Also - Juno or NetZero?

You just might find one even better than either of those...like I did:D (though in all fairness, my present ISP is not on that site anymore)
I've read stories about NetZero cancelling service to those that use their services excessively, and they decide what's excessive. You've been warned.
From what I know, the accelerated services work best when you go to sites repeatedly, because you've got pre-loaded graphics, etc, already on your PC. IMHO, keeping a large cache (>300MB) works just as nicely.

i do a lot of residential pc repair, seems a lot have earthlink , we had netzero, we started with the free netzero back when it was unlimited, now it is just 20 hours a month. We upgraded to the netzero gold... we liked it.
What ever you do not get sucked in by AOL.
We now have Verizon FIOS ( DSL on fiber optics) 1meg uploads and 650k downloads. Sure has come a long way since I had my 1200 baud modem and compuserve.
I also tried juno, did not like it.

...And how do I envy you :) . My wife is an employee of Verizon, and had schooled me, somewhat, on their Fiber Optic service. It so happens, though, that it isn't available in our neck of the woods yet - neither is their regular DSL service (what a bummer). It's coming, I know, but there is absolutely just when. I also know what you mean about AOL - and I wouldn't touch them at all. Maybe I'll just stick with Walmart Connect /with Firefox as my main browser, until such time as we can grab Verizon's Fiber Optic offering.

That may be the best for now. At least you never had to experience 900 , 1200 baud modems, having to wait past midnight when the rates changed to dial into bulletin boards 'cause there was not much in the way of the internet.

The Verizon Tech told me that Verizon bank rolled the FIOS deal and their whole existance depends on FIOS and if it succeeds or not.

I hope Verizon does well, they are going to have TV, Digital music, movies...They are in direct compatition with Comcast here. I have Comcast for my TV ( cable) , they are rude and they lie. They are totally doing you know what to my next door neighbor who works from home and has Comcast for their internet, also a friend of my mother, they are doing the same, and those are not isollated either.
I hope Verizon steam rollers Comcast.
 
The dial-up accelerator does make pictures look a little grainy at high compression rates, but its not completely horrible. And that only applies to web games, downloading and online games arent accelerated.

Hey Viking,

It is for a number of reasons that I hope Verizon fares well: one is (as was mentioned before) that my wife is employed there :) . I never heard of Comcast before, but we had Verizon service even before my wife got a job there, and they had always been courteous & helpful with any matters of concern. Yes, I can't wait until they have expanded into our area. I got spoiled with DSL speed when we, not too long ago, took advantage of Cable's Broadband service. They had a $19.95/per month special going on, and we jumped into it for the near maximum time of three months. The problem was that they were going to jump up to about three times that amount, per month, if we were to keep it beyond that. Internet speed isn't that important to me :) . I never did like Adelphia, years ago when I suscribed to their basic cable services. They seemed to employ a bunch of people who possessed very obnoxious & abrasive attitudes. But we thought that we'd try their broadband service. As I said earlier - I was spoiled, indeed, by the speed. But the company, itself, still didn't have enough character for me.

u can choose the speed u want, the faster it is the blurrier it becomes, im not totally sure but i think when ita t its fastest speed u can baarely make-out the pics
