Changing Serial numbers in XP

Is there a way I can change My serial number in XP?

I reinstalled window's at a friends house andd uses his CD and serial number to do it, and actully activated fine somehow.....

Anyways I want to switch it and put my number back on there. Is there a way i can do that without reinstalling again?

Not acording to the LEGAL agreement you have to agree to when insatlling, technically you can't even use it on more then one processer at a time, ro sso the agreement says, which i thought was odd, it was refering to wrokstations...prabally most commen to have dual cpu mobo's....Do you ened XP pro for that or something?

why would you need to reformat, installing windows again kind of makes sence, but you could always uninsatkll SP2 anyways.

nah, that was the problem, I had a ripped off corporate key for sp1 and then I wanted to change serials cause I got a legit one, but when I tried what they said, it wouldn't let me change it. I read some more and found out it was being done on pre-sp1 computers. Anyways, I tried installing sp2, but I obviously couldn't get it from Microsoft so I got it from somewhere else. The install went fine, but then my desktop and start bar quit showing up when windows started. I tried uninstalling sp2, but it would get halfway then freeze and afterwards I could only get into safe mode. I tried deleting all the updates manually, but it didn't help, so I reformatted and reinstalled.

I was not aware there was a limit. However if this is the case then that is complete BS from Microsoft. However if you know what you are doing you only have to do it once not matter how often you reinstall windows ;).

As suggested already google is our friend :). There is indeed a way.

Edit:

I know I should not but feel the need :). Why would someone become Admin simply by the amount of posts? Heck not even Moderator should be handed out simply because someone has allot of post. Anyhow back on topic :P.

You think 5 times is BS from microsoft? try 1! After that you can install it but it doesn't allow you to activate it, there is a trick around it though, you call them and tell them you upgraded your computer and they giv you a new one really easy, since they can't really be a hard ass on that because what if you really did :P

I also found out why i was able to use my friends, i was what came with his labtop which uses a differnt key, which i have to say i find hilarous :P
 
Some of you have been here long enough to know these kinds of discussions have been talked about many times...

Time to move on...
