I just had to reinstall XP and I must of misread when i was setting it up cause for the computer name i put my first and last name in and i dont want my full name to be the computer name so like when i go to my documents and settings it says my full name documents. Is there any way i can change that part of the computer name?

You would have to set up a new administrator's account with whatever name there and subsequently delete the currect user account. That will create the new set of folders with the whatever name there. Or you could reinstall Windows again? I'm sure you don't want to do that unless necessary.

If i create a new administrators account and delete the current one i have will i still be able to do everything i can do with the current account? Will it work just as good? Will i have to set up anything again?

You could try the "Control Panel>user accounts" settings for this to see how you do there. The screens here will show what to look for in changing the user name.

Once you have clicked on the user account to make changes to the next screen appears. Note the first item at the top is for changing name.

That should be the thing you need to do there.

what you have done and are now trying to change is called a user profile. sorry. you have to create a new admin enabled account with the correct name. it would cause any problems, log on with the new acct and delete the old account. make sure to ok the option to delete the files for that user as well...problem solved

Download TweakXP Pro and somewhere in there there is the option to change who the computer is registered to ect..;)

The fast way readily available besides the initial thought of creating a new admin account for that is right in the screen shots there. A quick trip to the Control Panel>user accounts will take care of that without hassle. There won't be any need to delete the current account as well as creating a new one using that method.

I think i'll just keep it the way it is now cause when i created a new administrator account and deleted the old one the programs i installed werent on the new account. thanks for you guys help.

That's the drawback of creating any new account where programs have to be installed fresh. This is why the options seen in the Control Panel are the consideration for something like this.

the only problem with renaming is that the old name is kept in the doc's and settings subfolder for the profile...not sure where else it is kept as I have only dealt with this once while trying to sell a laptop. I prefer AD and computers inside a domain :D

That's the drawback of the easy method seen there. This is why I suggested creating a totally new and separate admin account in order to see everything have the preferred alias and then remove the first. The last option is probably the least preferred of reinstalling Windows again just to see the change that way. If all goes well with a new admin you can avoid that.
