changing the default installation drive

ok. i just added a new HDD to my old Compaq Presario 5000 (it is VERY old:D) anyway, when i install programs, they will always install to the small partition (5gb) that my Windows XP home is installed on. is there a way to change the "default" installation drive? or is it because when you install XP it adds its own "program files" folder?

THANKS

I had this issue when I added a 20GB drive to my old DEC with a 4.3GB master.

On the slave drive, I added a Program Files folder. When the app was installing, and it asked where I wanted to put the files, I selected the new slave-drive Program Files folder instead of the full one on the C: drive. Worked just fine for me.

I don't know if there's some Windows tweak that would make this new folder the default path, however. I don't see anything in TweakUI for it. I myself wouldn't do that, but do it manually each time.

You can do it, but it requires editing the registry. If done wrongly, it can screw up your pc, so be careful and do this at your own risk.

Click start, run, type regedit, click ok. In the tree on the left hand side, locate this folder:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

In the main folder directory, there's a key in the right hand side called ProgramFilesDir. Double click, change the drive letter, then close the registry and reboot.

Hope this helps. :)

There certainly is .This is an extremely common thign to want to do, and the default directory is controlled by one registry key.

Follow instructions here - http://www.tech-recipes.com/windows_tips242.html

Just be sure to type in the CORRECT location of the new Program Files folder or you might find windows not being too happy when installing apps

*EDIT* - Damn beaten to it, should have refreshed the page
