Changing the internal hard drive

My knowledge of computers is basic, if that. I have an HP Desktop computer equiped with a Western Digital 80 gb internal hard drive, that is not working. I have a Dell laptop that I use most of the time but use the desktop for VOIP. What is the cheapest hard drive I can use? Do they all have the same connectors? Do I have to install an operating system with the new drive?

Thanks

What do you mean by not working? You need to take out existing drive and see if its an IDE drive or a Sata drive. IDE has about a 2" flat ribbon cable attaced to it. A Sata has a smaller connector.

post the model # of your HP, so others can help determine if it is IDE or SATA.
"Do I have to install an operating system with the new drive? " yes. you may have been able to ghost or clone the old drive, onto the new one, but if its toast, that may not be an option. Do you have the cd's that came with your HP? An 80g HD will run you about $35.00. What happens when you power up the HP? What messages are you getting?
