Changing to a new pc

I am replacing an older pc with a new pc (both running XP) and wanted to know what is to be done. For example, what about the forums that seem to be married to the pc? Do I just change the towers (pc's), connect all the cables and then login to the sites and everything is straightforward? PayPal, E-bay, etc. Will my ISP know that this is my computer? What about printers, drivers, etc.? I have read about making a crossover cable that will allow me to drag and drop files from one pc to the other, is this right? Are there any other pitfalls I should be concerned with? Any info/help is appreciated.

Hi.

Nowadays it is easy to switch internet (compared to dialup etc - which I am guessing you don't have). You got a broadband modem? The you should plug in the ehternet cable and XP will hopefully recoginse the network omn its own. If not you may have to use a wizard to set that up - but its easy!

As for your printers and other hardware. They will need reinstalling. Got the driver CD's..? Then you just follow their instructions. Treat them as if you have only just bought them and opened the box. The fact that they have been on another computer makes no difference.

For your files then you can get a cable, or burn them onto CD, transfer to a USB drive etc. Thats by far the easiest way. Do you have virus protection on your old PC? If not download AVG 8.0 Free Edition and scan them as you don't want to take any hidden virus onto your new computer.

Finally, your forums etc. Your passwords and favourites are stored by your browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox etc) and on your computer. You can download a programme to transfer them but ist probably not worth it. Just re-enter your passwords and save them as favourites the first time you visit them on your new computer. It is a good idea to delete your tempoary internet files and cookies when you finish with your old computer, or click "Forget Me" or whatever on the webpages..

Hope this essay helps, Doug.

I agree that I do not want to add the viruses that I am trying to leave behind! So what is the process of scanning the files? Do you click each one individually or folders at a time? Is there a special scan that AVG has that will do it? What type of files to scan (jpg, mp3...?) or all of them? What is the easiest way? CD or USB drive? Anyways, thanks.

You can create a custom scan (I expect - I don't have AVG) where you can tell it to scan certain things. Or just right click on a folder (eg My Documents) and "Scan with AVG" should show up on the menu that comes up.

Alternately you can scan all your computer (including all the Windows files) and that should pick up all virus', you mentioned you have a virus so I would recomend doing that. It's a good idea to get your old computer completely virus free before transfering any files (the easiest way is USB drive btw). If you go to the Computer Security section of this forum, and read the sticky thread at the top it will give you more information on how to do this, but download AVG first and do a full system scan.

Hope that helps, Doug.

Here's another question: Can viruses go from computer to computer if they are both connected to the same router? The reason I ask is that what if I just leave the older computer and have the kids use it for getting music and streaming video sites (isn't that where most viruses come from when surfing the web?) and then leave the new one for me and the wife. Can I-pods get viruses from sites that aren't I-tunes?

Virus can spread through a network I think, however if you have adequete virus protection and firewall on the new computer it should stop it from causing any trouble. It is definitely worth getting some antivirus software on your computers as that will probably be able to sort out the virus' on it.

Doug.

if you have a router, you can switch compouters and no isp can make a issue with it. if you use a modem and usb to your pc, then you may need to re register.
